CCPSA District Council 025

Belmont Cragin

"As Chicagos youngest politician, youth representation has always been a priority for Jacob, especially when it comes to public safety. I’ve been a community advocate my whole life, working with different nonprofits and being involved in social justice work. I think it’s important for young people to know that they have a voice and effect what happens in their neighborhoods and around the city. Too often young people think they’re being overlooked and think they can’t make a difference. I believe the opposite to be true, youth are the present and the future and I am here to uplift them in efforts to create a safer Chicago."

"Before running for District Council, I was a community organizer and block club leader. I reactivated blocks that hadn’t had block parties in 15 to 20 years. I worked with youth, starting from age 10 and up, to engage them in community programs and help steer them away from negative influences. I also worked with children raised by guardians or in foster care. Additionally, I collaborated with neighbors to create phone trees, worked with alders and park districts to find safe spaces for kids, work to help  improved street lighting for safety, addressed food security, advocate for people with disabilities in Black and Brown communities."

"Saul Arellano, a human rights activist since a young age, has now grown up to take action within our communities. Having witnessed the deportation of his mother in 2007, and later moving to Mexico for several years, the impact of community action became ingrained within him. He believes that a strong community is funded to thrive not simply survive. Establishing sustainable funding dedicated to youth programs, mental health services, and education, work as crime prevention by keeping youth engaged. Creating a community schedule with the working class in mind allows families to participate in conversations as to what community safety looks like for them."
